Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Therapy
at Trailhead Family Chiropractic

young boy working at a deskAs one of the fastest-growing serious developmental disorders in America, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects 1 in 45 kids according to recent survey estimates. It is a whole-body disorder—a brain-body disconnection. Its cause is still a mystery. Therapists, neurologists and pediatricians view autism as a disorder of the brain and use traditional treatment methods such as psychiatric medications and behavioral therapy, we believe that natural autism therapy through chiropractic is highly effective.

The Importance of Getting Checked

At Trailhead Family Chiropractic, we recommend that every infant is checked by a chiropractor for spinal trauma immediately after birth or at least within the first few weeks. Doing so will give every baby the chance to grow and express their life to their fullest potential and promote optimal neurodevelopment.

What Are the Symptoms?

While spectrum disorders usually aren’t diagnosed for a few years, there are other symptoms we have come to recognize as early as a few weeks:

  • Acid reflux
  • Colic
  • Constipation
  • Ear infections
  • Improper sleeping
  • Torticollis

What Does the Spine Have to Do With ASD?

The spine is extremely important because it is responsible for 60% percent of all proprioceptive (body awareness in space) sensory information that reaches the brain.

The highest concentration of proprioceptors resides in the upper neck. There are numerous events, such as C-section births, pharmaceuticals, unnatural foods, or stressful emotional environments that send the body into a tense “protect” mode.  If there is a lack of “normal” impulses and an increase of “abnormal” impulses (from improper or lack of movement in the spine) the brain will respond by activating the sympathetic response and won’t stop until the problem is resolved.

“Let’s say I put you in a pitch-black room, spun you around and then told you to find the door. You would most likely go into protect mode, tighten up, and feel nervous on the inside,” says Dr. Boman. That is exactly how your brain feels when the vertebral joints aren’t moving properly in the dark. Humans as early as birth can develop this problem called the vertebral subluxation.

A Parent’s Testimonial

My son who has autism is petrified of doctors. Every time we take him to see a doctor he cried the whole time during the appointment. However, Dr. Boman must be doing something right because my son always looks forward to seeing him and when he gets to the office he totally knows the drill, and when he leaves the office he is with a happy mood. I would ask my son every once in a while if he likes Dr. Boman and each time he would, using his limited speech, say yes in a very definite tone. I highly recommend Dr. Boman. He is great with kids. He is patient, caring, and in tune with his expertise. He is always looking out for my son and also referred us to try a service that may help my son with his autism.”
